Reiki is an energy healing technique that emerged in Japan in the early 20th century. The name "Reiki" comes from two Japanese words: "Rei," which means universal or spiritual, and "Ki," which refers to life energy or vital force. Thus, Reiki signifies "universal life energy."
The contemporary practice of Reiki was formulated by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 1920s. Dr. Usui, a Buddhist monk, developed the Reiki system following a spiritual epiphany during a period of fasting and meditation on Mount Kurama. He opened a clinic in Tokyo to teach and apply Reiki, and his teachings were further evolved and disseminated by his disciples, including Dr. Chujiro Hayashi and Hawayo Takata.
Reiki operates on the principle that a universal life force energy permeates all living beings, and this energy can be channeled to foster healing and overall well-being. Practitioners use their hands to direct this energy to the recipient, with the goal of harmonizing the body's energy and enhancing its innate healing capabilities.
